Description of Main Units

BED

The cast-iron bed consists of three joint segments: the under-headstock pedestal (L = 1990 mm), and few bed sections, available lengths are L = 5200 mm, L = 3900 mm.

The bed has three flat horizontal guideways: two front attached guideways made of hardened steel, and the back guideway made of cast iron. The front guideways are intended for the carriage. The back one is for the rests and the tailstock. The bed is pass-through, so the carriage is allowed to travel along the full bed length.

To compensate for the overturning moment caused by the cutting force there is an extra hardened steel guide-way positioned in the lower part of the bed.

A rack of the longitudinal feed drive is mounted under the front guideway. A rack of the tail stock feed drive is mounted under the rear guideway.

SPINDLE AND MAIN FEED DRIVE

The spindle stock is mounted on the head part of the bed. The main drive (N = 100 kWt, nnom = 1150 rev/min with controlled frequency) is connected with a main drive shaft of the spindle stock through a flexible sleeve-bolt coupling.

The spindle stock has three ranges. Speed is effected sleeplessly due to the changes of motor speed. Range switch is shifted hydraulically with the control from the operator desk. The maximum spindle speeds for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd range are 42 rev/min, 138 rev/min, and 250 rev/min, respectively.

The circular feedback encoder (1200 imp/rev) provides feedback relative to the spindle position and allows threading operations. The encoder is mounted on the back part of the spindle.

4-JAW CHUCK

A special 4-jaw chuck with independent jaw travel is mounted on the head part of the spindle. The jaw design provides workpiece setting in two positions to enlarge the chuck clamping diameters. The clamping force may be increased by using an extra jaw-worm pair.

TAIL STOCK

The lathe is equipped with a tail stock of 40-ton carrying capacity.

The tail stock has a prismatic quill with a built-in movable spindle. The quill travel is controlled by a worm gearbox with an electric drive. The quill drive mechanism is equipped with a visual control device to check the tightening force of a workpiece machined by the center. Manual quill travel is also available.

The tailstock travels along the guideways by means of a worm gearbox with an electric drive, with the torque transmitted to the pinion.

The housing of the tailstock is mounted on the bridge. The tail stock design allows it to move perpendicular to the guideways. The mechanism of clamping the bridge to the guideways is provided by a hydraulic drive.

CARRIAGE

The carriage of the lathe is a cross type design. The lower part of the carriage moves longitudinally along the bed guideways. The upper part of the carriage (the cross-slide) moves across the carriage guideways. The cutting tool slide (turret slide) is mounted on top of the cross-slide. The turret slide travels along the cross-slide guideways in manual mode. Workpiece machining diameter may be selected by moving the turret slide.

The high-torque motor (3000 rev/min) sets into motion the longitudinal feed drive by means of the Transmissions worm reducer.

The Heidenhein transducer of linear travel is mounted on the bed. It is meant as a feedback encoder of the longitudinal coordinate. An additional bearing which contacts the lower inclined guideway is mounted in the lower part of the longitudinal feed-drive housing.

The cross-slide travels through a precision worm reducer and a ball-screw pair 63х10, by means of the high-torque motor. Combined radial-thrust bearings are used as screw bearings. A rotary feedback encoder (2500 imp/rev) is mounted on the screw.

The slide travels manually across the lathe on a screw with a 50х3 trapezoid thread.

The operator area is built on the side platforms of the carriage housing. It provides convenient lathe control and observation of operations.

Steadies

The lathe is equipped with 2 heavy-duty rests. The steady rest is mounted on the back guideways of the bed. This steady rest provides machining of workpieces of Ψ 300-600 mm* (11.8" – 23.6")*. The open rest is mounted across the width of the bed. The rest supports a workpiece within the range of Ψ500-1500 mm* (19.68 – 59"). The housings of the bearings have 2 slots for adjusting the roller axle.
