INTRODUCTION TO DEAN SMITH & GRACE

DEAN SMITH & GRACE has been manufacturing lathes at the Keighley factory in England continuously since 1870.

The company company was purchased by the Monarch Machine Tool Company of Sidney, Ohio. Monarch DSG

manufactured lathes and machining centers for Monarch under both the Monarch and DSG names until 1996. DEAN

SMITH & GRACE is currently privately owned and managed. DEAN SMITH & GRACE manufactures manual and CNC lathes up

to the 5000 series, which is the 50”+ range. Their “pipe” machines (big bore) are recognized as being among the best and most reliable ever produced. Live tooling and other special features are available upon request.

 1—LATEST FLAT BED DESIGNS

This latest range of machine tools was designed for ROLLS ROYCE , Derby. The machines were specifically designed

for rigidity, accuracy, longevity and chip control. On a normal flat bed lathe the chips fall between the ribs of the

castings. On mass production this can cause a problem if the operator is not diligent.

DESIGN ADVANTAGES

A--With the latest design the rear discharge chip chutes have been designed into the bed casting along the full length

ensuring chips fall away freely into a slat type conveyor.

B—The width across the bed ways has been increased to increase rigidity and also to facilitate larger swings up to 60”.

C—Larger spindle bores can be accommodated due to the reduction in gear trains. Therefore we can easily

accommodate from 10” to 21” spindle bores using the same bed configuration and without weakening the structure.

D—The ergonomics of the machine have been greatly improved. The operator has a much clearer view of the

work piece component due to the compact saddle design.

E—Feed rates and speeds have been increased due to the digital technology utilised in this range.

DESIGN

The new 21” hollow spindle lathe is a variant on a machine that DSG is currently making for a company based in Rotherham , UK. The only differences are that their machine has a 15” spindle bore and is 5 m between centres. As a consequence this machine proposal is a proven design with installations in excess of 50 in the UK alone.

MANUFACTURE

The entire machine is manufactured in the DSG Keighley factory that has been the DSG home since 1870 , utilizing

DSG’s inherent skills on standard machines.

The latest digital technology would be incorporated with the FANUC 18i CNC control.
